Every child is different, and some children need a little extra help with their learning or development. Schools and settings use something called the Graduated Approach to make sure children get the right support at the right time.

The Graduated Approach is a step-by-step way of supporting children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). It helps schools understand your child’s needs, put support in place and check that it is working.

This approach is based on four repeating steps:

Assess – Plan – Do – Review

The Graduated Approach aims to:

• Identify any concerns early

• Make sure support is matched to the child’s needs

• Work closely with parents and carers

• Help children feel confident, included and able to make progress

Your views and your child’s views are important at every stage.

Schools use four levels of support. Children can move between these depending on their needs.

1. Universal Support (For All Children)

All children receive high-quality teaching in the classroom. Teachers adapt lessons so that different learning styles and needs are supported.

2. Emerging Needs

If a child needs some extra help, simple strategies and adjustments are put in place. This might include extra help in class, different resources, or small group work. Parents are always informed.

3. Targeted Support

If a child needs more support, a SEND pupil profile may be created. This clearly explains what support the child will get and the outcomes everyone is working towards.

4. Specialist Support

If progress is still limited, advice from specialist services may be requested. In some cases, an Education, Health and Care (EHC) Needs Assessment may be considered.

Assess:

Teachers and staff look at what your child is doing well and where they may be struggling. They listen to you and your child.

Plan:

Together, the school and parents agree what support will help and what progress is expected.

Do:

The school puts the agreed support in place. Teachers remain responsible for your child’s learning.

Review:

Progress is checked regularly (at least once a term). Plans are updated if needed.

The Graduated Approach helps to make sure that:

• Support is tailored to your child

• Parents and children are involved in decisions

• Progress is checked regularly

• Support changes if it is not working

• Children feel supported and included

• Talk regularly with your child’s teacher or SENDCo

• Ask questions if you are unsure about support

• Attend review meetings

• Share what works well at home

Remember – you are your child’s best advocate
