‘Every child is an artist; the problem is staying an artist when you grow up’ – Pablo Picasso

‘Creativity takes courage’ – Henri Matisse

At Woolton Primary School, we believe that Art and Design should motivate, challenge and inspire children through exposure to a broad range of techniques, materials and artists. We aim to equip pupils with the knowledge and skills required to investigate, experiment, plan, create and reflect upon their own artwork.
Our curriculum fosters a positive, lifelong relationship with art by broadening children’s creative horizons and developing resilience, independence and self-motivation. We recognise the significant impact art can have on children’s wellbeing and actively promote creativity, confidence and self-esteem. Through celebrating individual expression and achievement, we ensure that every child feels valued and proud of their work.

Art and Design is taught to every child from EYFS to Year 6. Skills and knowledge are carefully sequenced to ensure clear progression, enabling pupils to build securely upon prior learning year on year.
Children develop key artistic skills through researching artists and evaluating their own and others’ work, making thoughtful comparisons. They build knowledge of drawing, painting and sculpture through exploration and practical application. Core knowledge is regularly revisited and embedded to deepen understanding over time.
Pupils reflect on artists’ choices and consider how these may have been influenced by personal experiences and beliefs. They then plan and create their own artwork, making purposeful artistic decisions and drawing upon the skills, styles and knowledge developed in earlier phases of learning. Art is promoted through an engaging, creative and cross-curricular approach to enrich learning experiences.

As a result, pupils develop confidence, creativity and technical expertise across a range of artistic disciplines. They are able to discuss artists and artistic techniques using appropriate vocabulary, evaluate artwork thoughtfully and make informed creative choices in their own work.
Children demonstrate resilience, independence and pride in their achievements. They understand how art can reflect personal expression, culture and belief, and leave Woolton Primary School with a secure foundation of artistic knowledge and skills.
This ambition is evidenced through the consistent use of sketchbooks, which travel with pupils from year to year. These sketchbooks showcase progression in skills and creativity over time, enabling children to revisit prior learning and reflect on their artistic journey.
